The dinar was introduced on 1 April 1961 to replace the Gulf rupee, with an initial value equal to one pound and an exchange rate of rupiah against the former 13 ½ rupees per dinar.

When Iraq invaded Kuwait in 1990, the Iraqi dinar replaced the Kuwaiti dinar. During the invasion the Iraqis stole most high-value tickets that were sold on the black market or used again. After liberation, the Kuwaiti dinar was restored as the legal currency of the country and introduced a new series of banknotes, thus making the previous bills that had been stolen, shall lapse.
